Most Popular Airline: Thai Airways International

Common questions about travel to Bangkok

These are some of the most common questions people ask before booking a trip to Bangkok, why not see if something you're wondering is here?

Yes. You can fly non-stop from the UK to Bangkok but options are limited. British Airways runs direct services from London Gatwick and Thai Airways operates direct services from London Heathrow; other airlines sometimes add seasonal or occasional non-stop services so check before you book.
The main carriers operating non-stop London-Bangkok services are Thai Airways (typically from Heathrow) and British Airways (typically from Gatwick). A small number of other airlines have operated seasonal or limited non-stop services in recent years, so you may also see occasional non-stop options from other carriers at certain times of year.
A direct flight from London to Bangkok typically takes around 11 to 12 hours in the air. On British Airways, it is said it is roughly 11h 20-45m for Gatwick-Suvarnabhumi. One-stop routings add several hours depending on the connection. Expect non-stop London-BKK times of 11h 30 mins on most carriers.
Generally, mid-week travel and booking tends to be cheaper. Our data usually shows Tuesdays-Wednesdays (and sometimes Saturdays) often have lower fares while Fridays/Sundays are pricier.
Clearing immigration at Suvarnabhumi varies by arrival time and season but it is expected to take 30-45 minutes on average. It can be as quick as 5-15 minutes off-peak or extend to an hour. It can be more during busy late-night arrivals, holidays or when several long-haul flights arrive together.
Suvarnabhumi is about 28-30 km (roughly 17-19 miles) from central Bangkok (for example to Phaya Thai/central districts). By road this can take 30-60 minutes depending on traffic. While the Airport Rail Link (City Line) takes around 28-35 minutes to central interchanges. This makes it the fastest reliable city option during daytime.
For international travellers Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is usually better. It’s the main international hub with full-service carriers, better lounges, and the Airport Rail Link. Additionally it has easier onward connections into central Bangkok. Don Mueang (DMK) is mainly for low-cost and regional carriers (AirAsia/Thai Vietjet). So it can be cheaper but has fewer long-haul facilities and slower transfer options if you need to get into the city. Choose BKK for convenience and international connections, DMK if you’ve booked a budget carrier that flies there.
Usually no. If you stay airside (inside the international transit area) at Bangkok’s airports and your connection is under 12 hours, you normally do not need a transit visa. However, if your layover is longer than 12 hours, you plan to leave the airport, or you must pass immigration to collect and re-check luggage (for example on separate tickets or self-transfer). Then you will need a transit or regular visa before arrival. Certain nationalities are exceptions and face extra rules or must always get a visa. So, check the embassy for your passport or contact Oceans Travel if you are unsure!
