If you're a British Pakistani, a NICOP is probably the most useful card in your wallet that you rarely think about. It's what lets you fly into Lahore, Karachi or Islamabad on your British passport without a visa. It also keeps your Pakistani bank account, property and family paperwork working. The trouble is that the rules keep changing, and from July 2026 an expired card can stop you boarding your flight.
This guide covers everything about the NICOP card and Pakistani ID cards all in one place. You'll find what it is, what it costs from the UK, the exact documents you need, how to apply or renew in the Pak ID app, and what to do if yours has expired or gone missing. Every fee and rule was checked against official sources on 30 October 2026.
Quick answer. A NICOP is the National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis, issued by NADRA. It proves you're a Pakistani citizen and lets you enter Pakistan on a foreign passport without a visa, for as long as you like. From the UK it costs $39 online or £55.50 in person, and an adult card lasts 10 years.

NICOP FAQs
A NICOP is the identity card Pakistan gives to its citizens who live outside Pakistan. The letters stand for National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis. It's issued by NADRA, the National Database and Registration Authority, which runs all of Pakistan's ID cards.
It looks like a normal Pakistani ID card, but your "country of stay" is printed as the United Kingdom (or wherever you live) instead of Pakistan. In law, a NICOP holder is a full Pakistani citizen with the same rights as someone living in Lahore or Karachi.
You can apply if you're a Pakistani citizen and you live abroad. In the UK that usually means one of these.
You were born in Pakistan and now live in the UK.
You were born in the UK to a Pakistani parent and are a dual British and Pakistani national.
You're the child of a Pakistani or dual-national parent. Children can have a NICOP too.
If you give up your Pakistani citizenship, you can't get a NICOP. You'd need a Pakistan Origin Card (POC) instead, which we explain in the NICOP vs POC section.
A Smart NICOP is simply the current version of the card. It has a chip inside, like a bank card, that stores your details securely. NADRA now issues the smart version for all new cards and renewals, so when people talk about a NICOP today they almost always mean a Smart NICOP.
A CNIC (Computerised National Identity Card) is the ID card for Pakistanis who live in Pakistan. A NICOP is the same thing for Pakistanis who live abroad. You hold one or the other, not both. If you move abroad permanently, your CNIC can be converted into a NICOP when you renew.
The biggest reason most British Pakistanis keep a NICOP is visa-free travel. According to the UK government's Pakistan travel advice, a valid NICOP means you're recognised as a Pakistani citizen, and you can enter Pakistan without a visa and stay for as long as you want.
Here's what a valid card lets you do.
Travel without a visa. Fly in on your British passport and show your NICOP at immigration.
Stay with no time limit. Visitors on a visa have fixed dates. You don't.
Bank in Pakistan. Open and run a Pakistani bank account.
Buy, sell and inherit property. Property deals and inheritance paperwork need a valid NADRA card.
Work and study. You have the same rights to work and study in Pakistan as any other citizen.
Vote. NICOP holders can vote in Pakistani elections.
Get a Pakistani passport. You need a valid NICOP or CNIC before you can apply for one.
When your card expires, these things start to stop working. Banks, mobile SIM registration and property deals already block people with expired NADRA cards. Since July 2026, travel has been added to that list.
No. Since mid-July 2026, you can't board a flight to Pakistan on a foreign passport with an expired, cancelled or invalid NICOP. You'll need a valid Pakistani visa or a valid Pakistani passport instead, or the airline will turn you away at check-in.
For years, airlines let British Pakistanis fly with an expired NICOP, and some passengers were waved through with just the receipt (token) from their renewal application. That has now stopped. Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), which runs immigration at Pakistan's airports, told airlines to check that every passenger's NICOP is valid before they board.
As Dawn reported, passengers with an expired card won't be allowed on the plane unless they hold a Pakistani visa. The Express Tribune added that anyone who arrives with an expired or cancelled card will be sent back on the next available flight, and that renewal tokens are no longer accepted.
Yes. In July some posts on social media claimed British citizens could no longer enter Pakistan on a NICOP at all. Pakistan's government said those reports were wrong. As Gulf News explained, the rule only targets cards that have expired or are invalid. The UK Foreign Office's Pakistan entry requirements, last updated on 27 October 2026, still say a valid NICOP lets you enter without a visa.

You apply for a Pakistan visa online on NADRA's official visa website. Since 1 January 2026, the old free "visa prior to arrival" has been replaced by a paid online visa that takes about 7 to 10 working days.
Since 25 February 2026, British dual nationals need a valid British passport (or a certificate of entitlement) to enter the UK. So if you fly out on your Pakistani passport, take your British one with you for the journey back.
Our tip. Before you book flights, check the expiry date on every NICOP in your family, including the children's. If any card runs out before your return date, renew it first. It's far cheaper than changing a flight.
A NICOP costs $39 if you apply online through the Pak ID app on the normal service, which is roughly £29. Applying in person at a NADRA counter in the UK costs £55.50 for the same card, including delivery to your home. The fee is the same whether it's your first card, a NICOP renewal, a replacement for a lost card or a change of details.
NADRA puts the UK in "Zone A" with the USA, Europe and Australia, so you pay Zone A prices.

Online fees are set in US dollars by NADRA (ARY News). The pound figures are our rough conversion at about $1.33 to £1. Your bank will set the exact amount and may add a foreign transaction fee. In-person fees come from the Pakistan High Commission in London.
Home delivery of your card to your UK address.
£3.50 of bank charges.
Payment by debit or credit card. American Express isn't accepted.
If you apply at a NADRA mobile van visit (Mobile Registration Team), there's an extra £10 on top.
The online normal service is the cheapest way to get a NICOP card. It saves you about £26 compared with the counter, and you don't need to travel to London, Manchester, Birmingham or Bradford. The counter is worth paying for if the app won't read your fingerprints, or if you're applying for the first time with a complicated family record.
NADRA doesn't have any official agents for NICOP. Private agent websites in the UK were charging between £99 and £165 per card in October 2026, according to a price check by Identity Services PK. That's more than NADRA's own fastest service. The only official online channels are the Pak ID app and websites ending in .gov.pk.
For a NICOP renewal you only need your old card and proof you live in the UK, such as your passport or a Share Code. A first NICOP needs more, because NADRA has to link you to your family record. Use the checklists below for your situation.
One rule applies to everyone. Your parents' and your spouse's NADRA cards must be valid before NADRA will process yours. If one of them has expired, renew that first. If a parent or spouse has passed away, their card needs to be cancelled first, which requires a death certificate.
Your birth certificate. A UK birth certificate is fine. If you were born in Pakistan, it must be the computerised version.
Your valid passport (British or Pakistani), or your UK Share Code, or another proof of your legal right to stay in the UK.
The NADRA card number of a parent or brother or sister.
Your marriage certificate, if you're married. Pakistani certificates must be computerised.
Citizenship or naturalisation papers, if you have them.
A parent or a brother or sister aged 18 or over, with a valid NADRA card, to confirm who you are with their fingerprints.
If none of your family can give fingerprint verification, the form can instead be signed off (attested) by a NICOP holder living abroad, or by a gazetted officer or elected representative in Pakistan. If your family isn't on NADRA's records at all, you need two NICOP or ID card holders as witnesses, plus a signed statement called Affidavit B. This comes from NADRA's own guidance, published in October 2026.
Your expired or expiring NADRA card (the original, a copy or just the number).
Your valid passport, or your UK Share Code, or another proof of legal status in the UK.
That's all, as long as nothing on the card is changing except your photo.
Your current NADRA card.
Your valid passport.
Proof of the change, such as a computerised marriage certificate.
The child's birth certificate.
Both parents' valid NADRA cards.
The child's passport, unless the baby is under 6 months old.
A parent present for the application.
The in-person lists come from the Pakistan High Commission in London.
Yes, in the UK you can. The High Commission accepts your UK Share Code or another proof of your legal right to live in the UK instead of a passport, for both first cards and renewals. You get a Share Code free from GOV.UK if you have settled status or another digital immigration status. Babies under 6 months don't need a passport for their first registration.
You can apply for a NICOP online from your sofa in the UK using NADRA's free Pak ID app. The app takes your photo and fingerprints with your phone's camera, so for most people there's no office visit at all. Your finished card is couriered to your UK address.
The Pak ID app is free on the Apple App Store and Google Play. Search for "Pak Identity" and check the developer is the National Database & Registration Authority.
Download the app and create an account. Sign up with your email address and mobile number. The app checks your identity with your face or fingerprints.
Choose the right service. Go to Identity Documents, then ID Card, then pick New NICOP. For an existing card, pick Renewal, Modification or Reprint instead.
Choose your speed. Normal (39),urgent(57) or executive ($75).
Fill in your details. Enter your own details, then your parents' and other relatives' details as the app asks. Make sure names match your passport exactly.
Take your photo. The app guides you to take an ID-standard photo with your camera.
Scan your fingerprints. You hold your fingers up to the phone's camera, following the on-screen guide.
Sign on screen. Draw your signature on your phone with your finger.
Upload your documents. Photograph or upload the documents from the checklist above.
Complete verification. Download the fingerprint form and attester form, get them completed and upload them. A parent or adult brother or sister can verify you with their own fingerprints. Applicants abroad otherwise need two NICOP holders as witnesses.
Pay the fee. Pay by Visa or Mastercard. Make sure your card allows payments in foreign currency.
Track your application. Your application number appears in the app, and you can check its progress there. NADRA may message you if it needs another document.
Receive your card. Your NICOP card is delivered by courier to the address you gave. The processing clock starts once your fee has been paid.
If the scan keeps failing, book an appointment at one of the four UK NADRA counters, where staff take your fingerprints with a proper scanner. NADRA also began using facial recognition at its centres in January 2026 for people whose fingerprints can't be verified.

If you're travelling with Oceans Travel and get stuck on the form, our team is happy to talk you through what each section is asking. You'll still apply yourself through the official Pak ID app.
The quickest way to do your NICOP renewal is online in the Pak ID app. It costs $39 on the normal service and takes about 31 days, or $75 and about 9 days on the executive service. You only need your old card and your passport or UK Share Code.
Your expiry date is printed on the front of the card. Adult cards last 10 years. Don't leave it until the last few weeks. Once a card expires, Pakistani banks, mobile networks and property offices treat it as invalid, and since July 2026 you also can't fly to Pakistan on it. If you're planning a trip, give yourself at least 6 to 8 weeks before your flight on the normal service.
The steps are the same as a new application in the section above, with three differences.
Choose Renewal instead of New NICOP.
Upload your old card (or enter its number) instead of a birth certificate.
Most of your family details are already on NADRA's system, so there's less to fill in.
You'll still retake your photo and fingerprints, because the new card needs a fresh photo.
You renew an expired card in exactly the same way, for the same fee. If you need to travel soon, choose the executive service. If your flight is less than about 2 weeks away, apply for a Pakistan e-visa as well, since you can't fly on the expired card or on your renewal receipt.
If you'd rather speak to someone, or the app won't accept your fingerprints, you can apply at one of four NADRA counters run by Pakistan's diplomatic missions. You must book an appointment first. Walk-ins aren't served.

Book through the High Commission's appointments page. Bring every document from the checklist, and pay by debit or credit card on the day (£55.50 normal, £68.50 urgent, £83.50 executive). Your card is posted to your home address.
At the London counter you can apply for a first NICOP, a renewal or a change of details, as well as a Family Registration Certificate and a biometric update. Only British Pakistanis can apply there, because the card will show the United Kingdom as your country of stay.
If you live far from all four offices, or you're elderly or disabled, NADRA's Mobile Registration Team visits towns across the UK. It costs £10 more than the counter. The High Commission publishes the mobile van visit schedule, and community groups can ask for a visit to their area.
Yes, children can have a NICOP, including newborn babies. It gives them the same visa-free entry to Pakistan as their parents. The fee is the same as an adult card ($39 online or £55.50 in person on the normal service).
The child's birth certificate (a UK one is fine).
Both parents' valid NADRA cards. If either parent's card has expired, renew it first.
The child's passport. Babies under 6 months don't need one for their first registration.
A parent present when you apply, or a parent completing the app application.
For children under 14, a NICOP lasts 10 years or until their 18th birthday, whichever comes first. Children aged 14 to 17 get a card valid for 10 years.
There's one more thing to watch if your child needs a Pakistani passport. The Pakistan High Commission says a child's NADRA card expires at age 10 for passport purposes. After that, the child must get a new card with their photo and fingerprints before a passport application can go ahead.
If you've lost your NICOP card, or it's been stolen or damaged, you apply for a duplicate (called a "Reprint" in the Pak ID app). It costs the same as a new card, $39 online on the normal service or £55.50 in person.
You also use the Pak ID app or a UK counter to change details on your card. The most common changes are a new address, marriage, divorce or a name change. You'll need proof, such as a computerised marriage certificate. A change counts as a "Modification" and costs the same as a new card.
If you're married or divorced, update your NICOP before you apply for a Pakistani passport. The passport office uses NADRA's records and won't process an application that doesn't match.
A NICOP takes about 31 days on the normal service when you apply online, 23 days on urgent and 9 days on executive. Courier delivery to the UK adds a few days on top. In person, the High Commission quotes 6 to 8 weeks, 3 to 4 weeks and 2 weeks, including delivery.

No. The fastest official option is the executive service at about 9 days online. Be careful of websites promising a NICOP "in 24 hours". If your trip is sooner than that, apply for a Pakistan e-visa and renew your card when you get back.
Open the Pak ID app and check your applications inbox, which shows your tracking number and status. If you applied in person and can't see an update, call the High Commission on 020 7664 9200.
If you're still a Pakistani citizen and live in the UK, you need a NICOP. If you gave up Pakistani citizenship, or you're a foreign national with Pakistani parents or grandparents, you need a Pakistan Origin Card (POC). A CNIC is only for Pakistanis who live in Pakistan.

How to apply from the UK |

Online only (Pak ID) |
Not issued in the UK |
The Free and Fair Election Network explains these rights in more detail. In the UK, POC applications are online only. The High Commission stopped booking POC appointments at its counters.
Most delays to a NICOP come down to a handful of avoidable mistakes.
Family cards have expired. NADRA won't process your card until your parents' and spouse's cards are valid. Check theirs first.
Choosing the wrong category. New, Renewal, Modification and Reprint each have different requirements. Pick the one that matches your situation.
Names that don't match. Spell your name exactly as it appears on your passport, including any middle names.
Old-style Pakistani certificates. Birth, marriage, divorce and death certificates from Pakistan must be the computerised versions.
Leaving it too late. People often renew only when they book a trip. With 31 days' processing on the normal service, that's cutting it fine.
Relying on a renewal receipt to fly. Airlines no longer accept application tokens. You need the card itself, a visa or a Pakistani passport.
Paying an agent or a fake site. NADRA has no official NICOP agents. The real online services are the Pak ID app and websites ending in .gov.pk.
Once your NICOP is sorted, we can help with the rest. Oceans Travel books flights from airports across the UK to Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and other cities in Pakistan.
We don't process NICOP applications, because those go straight to NADRA. But if you're travelling with us and you're confused by part of the form, our team will happily explain what it's asking and point you to the official Pak ID app. Call us on 0330 818 1234 or get in touch online
Before you book, check three things.
Every traveller's NICOP is valid until after your return date.
Your British passport is valid for the journey home.
NICOP stands for National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis. It's the ID card that NADRA, Pakistan's national registration authority, issues to Pakistani citizens who live abroad, including British dual nationals and their children. It proves you're a Pakistani citizen and lets you enter Pakistan without a visa.
An adult NICOP is valid for 10 years from the date it's issued. Children aged 14 to 17 also get 10 years. For children under 14, the card lasts 10 years or until they turn 18, whichever comes first. Your expiry date is printed on the front of the card.
Online, a NICOP renewal takes about 31 days on the normal service, 23 days on urgent and 9 days on executive, plus a few days for courier delivery. In person in the UK, it takes 6 to 8 weeks, 3 to 4 weeks or 2 weeks, delivery included.
No. Since July 2026, airlines refuse boarding to passengers on a foreign passport whose NICOP has expired, unless they also hold a Pakistani visa or a valid Pakistani passport. Renewal receipts aren't accepted. Renew on the executive service or apply for an e-visa before you fly.
Yes, in the UK. The Pakistan High Commission accepts your UK Share Code or other proof of your legal right to live in the UK instead of a passport, for first cards and renewals. Babies under 6 months don't need a passport for their first registration.
Yes. You can apply for a new NICOP, a renewal, a replacement or a change of details in NADRA's free Pak ID app. It takes your photo and fingerprints with your phone camera, you pay by card, and the card is couriered to your UK address.
You need a valid NICOP or CNIC to apply for a Pakistani passport in the first place. If you travel on a valid Pakistani passport, you don't need a NICOP to enter. You can hold both, and use the NICOP whenever you travel on your British passport.
Apply for a duplicate, called a Reprint in the Pak ID app. It costs the same as a new card, $39 online on the normal service or £55.50 at a UK counter. Your NADRA number stays the same, and the new card is posted to your address.
