Sri Lanka is a Top Travel Destination for 2012

Award-winning British travel magazine Conde Nast Traveller has featured Sri Lanka in its December 2011 edition as one of the hottest new travel destinations for the coming year.

Now that the country is free of Tamil Tiger terrorists, tourists are free to explore its many unspoiled beaches and beautiful tropical scenery.

Many other major publications have named Sri Lanka has a popular destination for 2012, including the New York Times, Travel and Leisure Magazine, and National Geographic Traveller Magazine. Sri Lanka is already experiencing a huge influx in visitors and is expected to have a very strong year in its tourism industry in 2012.

Formerly known as Ceylon, Sri Lanka is a country in Southern Asia directly south of India. It is an island country in the Indian Ocean and it has a long and rich history. It is also famous for its incredible natural beauty, which has earned it the nickname "Pearl of the Indian Ocean". The island features humid tropical forests, white sandy beaches, and a wide variety of flora and fauna. Sri Lanka is an excellent destination for surfing, and the beaches will be much less crowded than other popular surfing locations. The island also has its own distinct traditions in music and the performing arts, which are passed down through the many lively festivals held throughout the year.

 

 

 
Now that the Tamil Tigers are gone, travellers will be able to explore this beautiful country. As a result of the lack of tourists, the northern and eastern areas of Sri Lanka are virtually untouched. Their natural beauty has been kept intact and the stunning sandy beaches are just waiting to be enjoyed. Of course, as these areas have not seen many tourists before it is to be expected that the facilities and accommodation will not be as luxurious as other destinations. However, there are many rustic retreats and beach huts which will offer the adventurous explorer a very authentic experience. There is also a new resort which is being developed in the nature reserve of Pigeon Island, with luxury rooms and a pool near the beach.

In response to the tourism boom, many of the major international hotel chains in Sri Lanka, such as the Ritz Carlton, the Marriot, the Sheraton and Shangri-la have made large investments and begun building new properties. Also, new airlines are establishing flights to Sri Lanka to keep up with the growing demand while existing airlines are increasing their flights to Sri Lanka with more frequencies.

At the moment, Sri Lanka is breaking all past tourist arrival records as a very high number of visitors flock to this stunning country with many top world renowned flights to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is expected to register over two million visitor arrivals by the year 2015.
