Attari Wagha Border in Amritsar

The most remarkable site to visit in Amritsar is undoubtedly, Wagah, this is the international border between India and Pakistan. The pomp and pageantry of the Beating Retreat and the Change of Guard within handshaking distance of the Indian and Pakistani forces makes for a most charming spectacle. Wagah, an army outpost on Indo-Pak border - between Amritsar and Lahore, is an elaborate complex of buildings, roads and barriers on both sides. The daily highlight is the evening "Beating the Retreat" ceremony. Soldiers from both countries march in perfect drill, going through the steps of bringing down their respective national flags. As the sun goes down, nationalistic fervour rises and lights are switched on marking the end of the day amidst thunderous applause.

The Museum of Peace at the Attari-Wagah, Indo-Pak border in Amritsar is a celebration of the common architectural, cultural and culinary heritage of pre-partition Punjab in general and Amritsar-Lahore in particular. Whenever Punjabis visit either side of the border, there is an unmistakable feeling that a part of the Punjabi psyche and soul resides in the other half. The Museum of Peace is dedicated to the yearning and pining of Punjabis on either side of the border to know about their brethren on the other side, and their immense pride and nostalgia in their common history, culture and traditions.

The Museum of Peace at the Attari-Wagah border in Amritsar is unique and different from any other museum in the world. It can be said to be the world's only fusion museum - where the architectural, cultural and culinary experience blends into a composite whole. Visit Amritsar to experience the heritage and history of Amritsar.

The visitor's museum experience begins even before he enters the museum building as the museum building itself reflects the great architectural heritage of exquisite design and craftsmanship in brick work which still survives in some of the old buildings of Lahore and Amritsar. The buildings of the walled cities of Amritsar and Lahore have a defined architectural style which expresses itself in some exquisite craftsmanship in exposed brick work. Unfortunately, much of this common architectural heritage is being lost.

No experience of pre-partition Amritsar and Lahore could be complete without savouring the culinary delights of these two cities and, therefore, it was natural to develop as part of the Museum complex the restaurant, SARHAD-Taste of Amritsar-Lahore. The Museum is ideally located in Amritsar, in village Attari less than two kilometres from the Wagah border and the Attari rail station, which is the last railhead on the Indian side.

The Museum of Peace at the Attari-Wagah border is not merely a repository of objects and artefacts-it is home to the soul of Punjab.
